Diwali is a major festival of the Hindus and is celebrated throughout India. Deepawali is celebrated to symbolize the victory of Good over Evil. Deepavali is celebrated on the New moon day (Amavasya) of the Hindu month Kartika, which is usually October or November.
It is also believed that Goddess Lakshmi was born on the new moon day (amavasya) of the month of Kartika.

Deepavali Five Days Celebration

Diwali festival usually lasts for five days, starting on Dhanteras and ends on Bhaiya Dooj. Hindus decorate their homes with decorations, electric serial bulbs and oil lamps. They worship Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi and do Puja for prosperity. People wear new dresses and cook variety of food delicacies. They also distribute sweets and gifts to their relatives and friends to express their happiness. Fire crackers are lit at night by both children and adults.

The five days are observed as below.

Day 2 Naraka Chaturdasi Oil bath is taken.
Day 3 Diwali The Deepavali day.
Day 4 Kartika Shudda Padyami
Day 5 Bhaiya Dooj (Yama Dvitiya) symbolizes the affection between brothers and sisters.
