What are Hyenas?
Hyenas are of African origin. There are four species of hyenas. Those with stripes on the body are called striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena), those with spot on the body are called the spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta), the brown hyena (Hyaena brunnea), and the aardwolf (Proteles cristata).

Are hyenas cowards ?
Hyenas prefer to eat the left overs of the meal of other animals rather than hunting its own prey. They depends on larger animals like lion or tiger for their food. Due to this reason, hyenas are labelled as cowards.
Hyenas have a strong jaw bones and hence it can eat the carcasses completely by breaking even the large bones in it.
At certain times, if they do not get any left over foods, they hunt their prey collectively. Hyenas usually attack and kill animals which do not attack back, like the Zebras. But spotted hyenas kill and eat 95% of their food.
